FLA DEMS Statement on Rick Scott’s FAILED Economic Policies

January 20, 2012
By

Tallahassee, FL — Today, Florida Democratic Party Chairman Rod Smith released the following statement on Florida’s unemployment numbers and Governor Rick Scott’s failed economic policies. “Governor Rick Scott’s Tea Party agenda is moving our state in the wrong direction and forcing Florida’s economy to lag behind the rest of the nation. Under President Obama’s leadership unemployment continues to decline, but here in Florida Scott has favored an extreme agenda that has rejected jobs and slowed growth. The bottom line: Scott cares more about his extreme agenda than  strengthening our economy and protecting middle class families.” Jobs Killed by Rick...

Rick Scott Hits a New Low, Plus Marco Rubio and More

Rick Scott has hit a new low in Public Policy Poll’s  Florida polling with only 26% of voters now approving of his job performance to 58% who disapprove. Rick Scott has hit a new low in PPP’s Florida polling with only 26% of voters now approving of his job performance to 58% who disapprove… Scott is the most unpopular Governor in the country in PPP’s polling.   Marco Rubio’s poll numbers have declined every time PPP’s polled Florida this year…There’s not much evidence Rubio would be a game changer as Republican Vice Presidential pick next year either. Only 24%...

Teachers: a target of the new GOP-backed voter law

A new voter law, backed by Gov. Rick Scott and the Republican-led Legislature, is stopping the worst kind of atrocity a Republican controlled state government can imagine: young people registering to vote. And who might you ask is undertaking the outrageous, egregious act of registering students? Florida schoolteachers, merely hoping to relay the importance of student’s doing their civic duty. The horror. Folks, nobody is fooled by the real goal of Republicans in passing this voter suppression law. They know that when young people go to the polls in large numbers Democrats win. They know one of the reasons President...

Rep. Bullard Speaks Out in Support of Lawsuit Filed by FEA

Miami, FL – Florida State Representative Dwight Bullard (D-Miami) issued the following statement in support of a lawsuit filed today by Florida Education Association (FEA) against Florida Governor Rick Scott and other defendants regarding Florida’s pension laws. “I applaud the actions taken today by the Florida Education Association in bringing a lawsuit against the State of Florida. Republican leadership’s attempt to disregard teachers and the middle class by rendering a contractual agreement with state employees null and void violates Florida’s constitution. We cannot balance our budget on broken promises. The state of Florida has a contractual obligation with all...

Statement from Representative Bullard Regarding Cuts to Early Learning in Miami

Governor Rick Scott has clearly shown jobs and education are not among the top priorities of his administration. Following a $13 million cut to the School Readiness and Voluntary Prekindergarten (VPK) programs, one can logically deduce that families and kids are also not priorities of the Governor. Due to severe budget cuts passed by the Republican-controlled legislature, the Early Learning Coalition of Miami-Dade/Monroe is now forced to disenroll between 4,500 and 5,000 children from the School Readiness program. Parents with children remaining in the program now face substantial fee increases due to the budget cut. “I am outraged by...

MIAMI-DADE YOUNG DEMOCRATS OPPOSE RICK SCOTT’s JOB-DESTROYING BUDGET

MIAMI, Fla. – Leaders of the Miami-Dade Young Democrats issued the following statement: “Our organization is proud to stand beside our Democratic leaders in opposition to the “job-destroying” budget signed by Rick Scott. Beginning with the refusal of $2.4 billion in high speed rail, Governor Scott has failed to create jobs in Florida. This federal funding would have created over 6,000 real jobs this year. In addition to destroying good paying jobs, Governor Scott has made it his priority to weaken our public education system. Billions were cut from Education and college students will incur more tuition increases. With...

Rep. Luis R. Garcia, Jr. on the 2011 budget vetoes

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – State Representative Luis R. Garcia, Jr. (D-Miami) issued the following statement on the 2011 budget vetoes. “I am extremely outraged by Governor Rick Scott’s veto today of over twenty-five million dollars from Miami-Dade area programs. His vetoes make further cuts to Miami-Dade senior programs, medical research and social endeavors. The budget already contains profound cuts to public education and public workers and these vetoes will exacerbate an already sad situation. Three hundred thousand dollars were cut from the Little Havana Activities and Nutrition Center Program and four hundred-thirty thousand dollars for the DeAllapattah Hot Meals Program....

House Dems Reject Court-Packing Scheme

FLORIDA HOUSE DEMOCRATS REJECT COURT-PACKING SCHEME  Source: Florida House Dems TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – A united Democratic Caucus in the Florida House voted today in strong opposition to a proposed overhaul of the Florida court system and branded the Republican proposal a politically motivated court-packing scheme. HJR 7111 would expand the Supreme Court from seven to 10 members and split them evenly into separate divisions for criminal and civil appeals. That measure also requires that the more senior justices go to the criminal bench. House Democratic Leader Ron Saunders (D-Key West) said that “court packing is wrong” regardless of partisanship....

REP. BULLARD RAISES CONCERNS OVER PROPOSED EDUCATION BUDGET MIAMI, Fla. – April 7th, 2011 – Representative Dwight M. Bullard, the Democratic Ranking Member on the Florida House Education Committee, raised major concerns with the proposed 2011-12 education budget. “Our budget in 2008-2009 was $900 million less than our projected budget for 2011-12. We are also spending $1 billion less on per-student funding this year than we did in 2008 and 2009. This proposal is not student-centered—nor does it meet our constitutional obligation to provide a high quality public education for the next generation of Floridians,” said Representative Bullard.   In...
